I wish it could describe it as devastating, but it was the equivalent of a telekinetic schoolboy push. Lo Wang also possesses the ability to unleash a Chi blast. But they are few and far apart and are the distinctive feature of the environments.Īll this means that you can basically sprint from one combat arena to the next with little regard for the world around you. Especially the environmental traps, which were highly enjoyable to use against demons. By the end of the game, the environments were nothing more than dull backdrops, and it feels like more could have been done in this arena. However, they do not do much to be captivating in any meaningful way. In fact, the Riot Gun is pretty much the DOOM shotgun with a coat of Shadow Warrior paint on it.Īlthough the environments are bland and inconsequential, they maintain a Far Eastern mystic feel throughout the experience. Character models and gun designs are fantastically detailed. In the graphics department, Shadow Warrior 3 is fairly high quality, but nothing too spectacular. One chi blast exposes a yellow crystal formation on its back that is just calling for all that you can dish out. These accordion-esque enemies have a nice bright yellow spot on their base that you should absolutely unleash on. Some have their own distinct weak areas to pinpoint. There is plenty of variety of demons to fight in Shadow Warrior 3. You can upgrade the weapon so it can penetrate through enemies. While, my personal favorite, the Basilisk, is a powerful long-range weapon that has to be charged between shots. For instance, the dual SMGs, the Sidekicks, can be upgraded to provide shock attacks on enemies. There are not a lot of weapons in the games, but they are diverse and feel unique. Each weapon has a distinct style to them and no two weapons handle or debuff the same. Movement is swift and sudden, as is the shooting. Demons of all shapes and sizes immediately go into aggro mode and are hellbent on taking you to the shadow realm. Once Lo Wang enters these zones, all hell breaks loose. Shadow Warrior 3 has distinct combat zones. Games where split-second, hair-trigger reaction times are key to survival and success. Games like Unreal Tournament come to mind. Shadow Warrior 3 is reminiscent of FPS games from the early 2000s. DOOM is a major influence here and the game does not try to hide it. Let’s not beat around the bush, Shadow Warrior 3 absolutely nails gunplay. Luckily, the gunplay is tight and fun throughout the 8-hour experience. However, people do not play this kind of game for the story. We get a little betrayal and some end of days jargon, but in the end, the story is an afterthought. The game is essentially a race to stop impending doom and does not inspire or do much. Of course, the awoken dragon has also brought about an invasion by a demon horde.Īlthough the characters are nothing more than caricatures, the same treatment is also applied to the story. You have joined forces with your former enemy and employer Orochi Zilla to track down and defeat an ancient dragon they accidentally awakened. In Shadow Warrior 3, you play as Lo Wang, a corporate enforcer-turned-freelance merc. However, it is clear that there are some rose-tinted glasses at play here. This time, though, it is essentially a love letter to id Software’s DOOM. Luckily, Shadow Warrior 3 stays true to its offbeat and over-the-top roots. The game is the direct sequel to 2016’s Shadow Warrior 2 (go figure). Simply pause the game and you’ll see the option to do so.Shadow Warrior is back, baby. You can at least revert to the last checkpoint if you need to for some reason. While you can’t save or load your progress manually. So, even if you die or something bad happens like the power goes off, chances are you’re never going to lose more than a few minutes worth of progress. Your progress is automatically saved at key checkpoints – typically after battles and challenging platforming sections. Some might not be all that happy about it, especially those who save scum, but on the whole the system works rather well. A robust autosave system is in play here, and there’s no way to manually save your game at all. To save your game in Shadow Warrior 3, you do… nothing. Shadow Warrior 3 isn’t the biggest game in the world, but you are going to want to save your progress as you set about completing it. Needless to say, the adventure that follows is full of gory fast-paced action as Wang shoots and slices his way through one environment after another. Lo Wang is back, and this time he’s got a giant dragon to kill. Out now on PC and consoles, Shadow Warrior 3 is the latest entry in the over-the-top first-person shooter series by Flying Wild Hog.
